Suspended Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) deputy chief Julius Mkhwanazi is expected back before the Madlanga Commission on Wednesday, where focus will turn to his initial affidavit following a tense and eventful day of testimony. There was little let-up during Tuesday’s proceedings, with Mkhwanazi appearing nervous at times as he was questioned extensively on his family background in the morning session. Earlier in the day, the commission dealt with confusion around his claim that he had missed a previous appearance due to his mother’s death.

It later emerged that the woman he buried was his stepmother, prompting questions about whether he had been fully forthcoming with the inquiry. When proceedings resumed, attention shifted to Mkhwanazi’s supplementary affidavits, which introduced several new lines of inquiry. He was questioned on whether he played a role in enabling police officers to operate outside their jurisdiction, allegations that EMPD officers under his command were linked to stolen precious stones, and claims that he was involved in the kidnapping of EMPD spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa.

The commission is expected to continue probing these issues, as well as his relationship with Medicare24 CEO and co-founder Michael van Wyk, when he returns to the stand. His appearance comes amid his suspension and ongoing disciplinary processes linked to allegations that he approved blue lights for vehicles associated with controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala. Broader concerns around governance within the EMPD have also surfaced during the commission.
