A four-year-old child was rescued during a near-drowning incident at Thompson’s Bay tidal pool this afternoon (30 December). He was then treated by the lifeguards on scene before being transported to the Ballito clinic by IPSS Medical Rescue, where he was to be monitored. KwaDukuza lifeguard Superintendent Bongani Xulu said the successful rescue was the result of rapid action and strong coordination among emergency role players.

He noted that beaches along the coastline have been exceptionally busy, leading to an increase in rescue incidents. “I’ve had multiple rescues on all beaches including mass rescues all successfully executed,” said Xulu. “Beaches have been far more busy but having all role players coming together have made it easier to focus on one’s responsibilities.” Xulu said lifeguards remain on high alert and are fully prepared to respond to emergencies as beach activity continues to increase. He urged beachgoers to swim only in designated areas, remain vigilant, and ensure young children are supervised at all times.
