Former Neef CEO to appear in court today

Former National Economic Empowerment Fund (Neef) chief executive officer Humphreys Mdyetseni is expected to appear in court today to be formally charged and apply for bail. He was arrested on Friday alongside Anderson Mbozi, an engineer and deputy director of irrigation services in the Department of Irrigation. The two have spent the weekend in police custody.

National Police spokesperson Lael Chimtembo said there is a strong possibility that the suspects will appear in court today for formal charges. However, he did not provide full details of the charges but indicated that they are linked to alleged abuse of office. “They are being charged with abuse of office.

Further details will be provided once the formal charge process is completed,” said Chimtembo. Mdyetseni, who hails from Sangambe Village in Traditional Authority (T/A) Kabudula, Lilongwe, served as Neef CEO since 2020, before the institution was rebranded from the Malawi Enterprise Development Fund. He was suspended in October 2025 pending further investigations, and has since been replaced by Kayisi Sadala.

Mbozi, from Chaluma Village, T/A Kalumbu in Lilongwe, is deputy director of irrigation services in the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development. The arrests come months after the government announced audits in several public institutions, including Neef, Greenbelt Authority, Salima Sugar Company and the Mega Farms Unit, among others.
