Football Legends Association (FLA) raised over K120 million in 2025 alone the association’s board chairperson Jim Kalua has disclosed. Kalua has attributed the success to good governance. “We have raised over K120 million through contributions from the corporate world, other partners and cycling event.
This does not include replica sales. We attribute our success to the good working relationships with all partners,” he said. “Within the association we emphasise much on governance.and clear set targets for all members.
No member operates without a target. We have clear guidelines.” Kalua, who is now the newly-appointed Malawi National Council of Sports board chairperson, has since urged associations to strive for excellence and win the trust of the corporate world through good governance. “It is my prayer that associations should not be heavily reliant on government funding.

We need to think outside the box and move towards self-reliance. Let us run the associations as businesses with set targets,” he said Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture spokesperson Macmillan Mwale said associations should borrow a leaf from FLA in terms of their operations to be successful. “Associations should always be accountable, vigilant in resource mobilisation and network with stakeholders.
They should also use resources for tangible outcomes as that attracts support from outside,” he said. Sports analyst Charles Nyirenda said associations should observe several factors that are contributing to the success of FLA. “Combination of factors has culminated in the success story of the legends’ body.
Football Association of Malawi backing, serious media support and the personalities behind the organisation have helped it to reach this far,” said Nyirenda. He has since advised FLA to start sustainable activities that generate money to avoid facing donor fatigue. “As for the other Sports disciplines my take is that lack of a strategic plan, which can be marketed to the corporate world, has in part contributed to their struggles to raise funds,” he said.
