Motorists in Pietermaritzburg and across the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands have been urged to exercise extreme caution as heavy rains continue to batter the region, raising concerns about localised flooding and infrastructure damage. Authorities specifically warned drivers to avoid low-lying bridges, many of which have already become submerged and unsafe to cross. The Msunduzi Municipality issued the alert on Saturday after persistent downpours left several roads waterlogged and dangerous.
Municipal spokesperson Nontobeko Mkhize said that while no major incidents had been reported, the effects of the severe weather were already visible in some communities. She noted that strong winds had caused trees to fall in certain areas, adding to the risks faced by residents. The warning follows a Level 2 severe thunderstorm alert issued by the South African Weather Service, covering large parts of KwaZulu-Natal.
The alert, which began on Friday evening and remains in place until midnight Saturday, includes regions such as eThekwini, uMgungundlovu District, and other northern and southern parts of the province. Forecasters have warned that the storms may bring heavy rainfall, strong winds, hail, and intense lightning. These conditions increase the likelihood of localised flooding, fallen trees, and damage to infrastructure.
