Five killed, several injured in multi-vehicle crash on N2 near KwaMbonambi

Five people, including a child, were killed in a multi-vehicle crash on the N2 near KwaMbonambi in northern KwaZulu-Natal on Friday afternoon. The collision, which occurred at about 2:30pm on the northbound lane of the N2 before KwaMbonambi, involved four vehicles carrying a total of 19 occupants. According to the Zululand Observer publication, emergency services reported that one person was left in a critical condition, six were seriously injured, and six others were assessed at the scene and found to be stable.

Two patients were declared dead at the scene, while three others were critically injured. Two people were entrapped in the wreckage, including the driver of one of the vehicles, who was resuscitated but later succumbed to his injuries. Two critically injured patients were transported to Ngwelezana Hospital, while two seriously injured patients were taken to Netcare’s The Bay Hospital.

Four other injured occupants were taken to Nseleni Clinic for treatment. The Zululand Observer reported that one of the vehicles, a double cab, was carrying 12 occupants, with the majority of injuries believed to have come from that vehicle. According to preliminary reports from the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI), it is alleged that one vehicle travelling south overtook on a barrier line and collided with a northbound vehicle.

“Vehicle one overtook on a barrier line and collided with vehicle two which overturned. Vehicle one went on to collide with vehicle three and pushed it to vehicle four,” Duma said. KZN Transport MEC Siboniso Duma conveyed his condolences to the families of the victims, describing the crash as horrific.
