In an incident that has left many questioning the hygiene standards at fast-food establishments, a video taken by a Bishop Lavis man has gone viral, showcasingthe filthy kitchen of the Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) outlet on Modderdam Road, Belhar. The footage, captured on Sunday night, depicts a scene so shocking that it turned what was meant to be a festive meal into an unappetising disappointment. The man, who chose to remain anonymous, explained that he and his wife decided to stop by KFC after attending the Festive Lights Switch-On in the city.
They opted for the 24-hour drive-through service, hoping to satisfy their cravings. However, what should have been a delicious late-night snack became a complete turn-off when they experienced over an hour-long wait in line. Daily Voice reported that as the couple waited, they observed a driver behind them expressing frustration.
Curiosity triggered the man to investigate further. A KFC outlet in Belhar has come under fire over a unhygienic kitchen. What he encountered was enough to squash any lingering appetite he had, with a kitchen that resembled “a varkhok” (pigsty).

“I wasn’t even hungry anymore, I was just naar,” he remarked in disbelief, describing the scene littered with cups, tissues, and chips strewn across the floor. In a chilling moment that highlights the concerning state of food safety, a KFC worker was seen walking over the rubbish while customers continued to place orders in the background. “Kyk hoe lyk it hier binne in die Kentucky, Belhar,” the man can be heard saying in the video, voicing what many would see as a grave concern over hygiene in a restaurant that serves food.
Disheartened by the experience, the couple spent about R300 on their meal but ultimately chose not to eat it, leaving them with sandwiches for supper instead. In response to the video, KFC has released an official statement indicating their awareness of the viral footage.
