Filthy illegal businesses uncovered in Durban police crackdown

Illegal businesses operating in unhygienic conditions were among those targeted during a major law enforcement operation in Durban’s city centre aimed at restoring order and ensuring compliance with municipal by-laws. The multidisciplinary Operation Gijima, led by eThekwini deputy district commissioner Brigadier Sakhengenkosi Zuma and operational commander Lieutenant Colonel Thobekile Mdedelwa, focused on illegal trading, unsafe business operations, immigration compliance and by-law enforcement. KwaZulu-Natal SAPS said the operation uncovered several businesses operating illegally, with officials also identifying premises that failed to comply with health and municipal regulations.

A building on Park Street was found to have been unlawfully converted into residential flats, restaurants and a sports bar. Police said charges have since been brought against the owner. During the operation, more than 20 foreign nationals were taken in for verification as authorities also investigated possible immigration violations.

The crackdown formed part of ongoing efforts to improve safety, enforce compliance and address illegal activities in the Durban CBD. “SAPS, together with its law enforcement partners, remains committed to restoring law and order, ensuring compliance with the law, and creating safer communities for all,” KwaZulu-Natal police said. Police urged members of the public to assist authorities by reporting illegal activities in their communities.
