Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has offered to help domestic football powerhouses on their intention to lease Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre. This comes after FCB Nyasa Bullets president Konrad Buckle and his Mighty Wanderers counterpart Thomson Mpinganjira recently expressed interest to lease the facility. FAM president Fleetwood Haiya said he approached both teams through their presidents to come up with a consortium for the lease.
“I approached both the Wanderers and Bullets presidents to say why don’t you guys come together and come up with a consortium so that you lease the stadium and then upgrade it,” he said. Haiya also said he took up the issue with President Peter Mutharika before the September 16 2025 General Election. “I can say it here that the current President, who was then a former president, agreed to the suggestion.
He said if the clubs are willing to invest in government infrastructure through a lease for 99 years, he would be willing to support the move once voted back to power,” he said. “I am very happy today that he is the President and we will seek an audience to follow up on the matter.” On what the two teams would be required to do should they proceed with the plan, Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture spokesperson Macmillan Mwale said they will have to apply to the ministry through stadium management. “In terms of costs, it would depend on what is being requested, including duration.

The stadiums have charge sheets,” he said. Mpinganjira said said he would not want to comment on the plans at this stage. On the other hand, Buckle reiterated that leasing the facility would help lessen the burden of paying ground levy.
“In the event that it works out, we can develop it into a modern facility,” he said. Presidential press secretary Cathy Maulidi said she needed time to consult on the issue.
