Political analyst and good governance expert, Wonderful Mkhutche, has commended Malawiâs Head of State, Arthur Peter Mutharika, for his performance during the first 90 days of his current term.
Malawi entered the new administration amid significant economic and social challenges, including fuel shortages, a scarcity of foreign currency, rising food insecurity, a sluggish economy, and high domestic debt.
However, according to Mkhutche, Malawians have already begun to notice improvements in some of these areas under President Mutharikaâs leadership.

During previous administrations, citizens frequently faced long queues for fuel and sugar, while farming particularly maize and tobacco, Malawiâs two main cash crops was severely affected by economic constraints.Â
These challenges were further compounded by mismanagement and unfulfilled promises, as evident during the tenure of former President Lazarus Chakwera, when public resources were reportedly misused.

âWhile challenges remain, early indicators suggest that the current administration is taking steps to stabilize the supply of essential goods and improve economic conditions,â Mkhutche said.
Meanwhile, Rev. Moses Nkhana, Executive Director of the Mzimba Youth Organization (MYO), noted that government interventions in the energy sector and agricultural support programs have already begun easing some of the pressures faced by ordinary Malawians, including reduced waiting times for fuel and improved access to agricultural inputs.
Commenting on President Mutharikaâs first 90 days, Christopher Melele, Executive Director of the Mzimba Institute for Development Communication Trust (MIDCT), emphasized that for Malawi to continue its economic recovery, reforms must be fully implemented and sustained, with a strong focus on transparency and good governance.
