An 84-year-old man, Cidreck Chitera, is facing immense challenges caring for his 88-year-old sister, Aidah Cidreck, who is suffering from a swollen leg and unable to walk, in Zomba, Masaula, Village head Lawudoni, with hardly any food or proper beddings.
Cidreck Chitera, the elderly man, spoke to Malawi24 about the challenges he faces in caring for his sister, who has been ill for almost a year now.
âMy sister has been ill for a long time, and I have been taking care of her alone since August 7 last year. I fetch water, do casual work to support us, and struggle to provide for her needs. We lack proper bedding, and I have to use torn clothes to cover her. Food is also a challenge, and sometimes we go without eating.â Chitera said.

Chitera said his sisterâs left leg is swollen, and she has been unable to walk since she fell ill. He wishes he could take her to the hospital, but they lack the money.
âThe main problem is the lack of money, I need help to take her to Zomba central hospital for proper medical attention. As her caregiver, I am also struggling, and it is getting tough,â he said.

In an interview, Maria Chitera, daughter of Cidreck Chitera and niece of Aidah Cidreck, says the situation has been challenging, with her father doing his best to provide for her auntâs needs despite their limited resources.
âThis issue has affected me greatly, as Iâm the one taking care of them. However, considering my own difficult circumstances, I realized I could not manage alone. I wanted to inform my father, Cidreck Chitera, to come and help me, but the problem occurred at my home, and I took responsibility.
Unfortunately, due to lack of money, we failed to take her to the hospital.â Maria said.Chitera appealed for assistance, saying his sister needs medical attention and a better living condition.
