Durban scholar transport driver hands himself in after fatal KwaMashu crash

A scholar transport driver who was involved in a fatal crash in KwaMashu has handed himself over to the police. A scholar transport driver, who was involved in afatal Durban crashin which a child died and 14 others were injured, has handed himself over to authorities. The children were travelling from daycare centres when the minibus taxi overturned in Mount Moriah, KwaMashu on Wednesday.

It was reported earlier that the driver had fled the scene. In a statement on Thursday afternoon, KwaZulu-Natal Transport Siboniso Duma confirmed that the driver had handed himself over to the Phoenix police. In a voice note, Duma’s spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya said Duma had announced that the Road Traffic Inspectorate team is working with the Durban Metro Police to strengthen the integrated law enforcement programme focusing on scholar transport safety.

A child was killed and 14 were injured when a scholar transport taxi overturned in Mount Moriah, KwaMashu on Wednesday afternoon. Duma conveyed condolences to the family of the child who died in the tragic incident. “We wish to express our deepest condolences to the family of a child that died tragically,” said Duma.

He said the injured children were taken toMahatma Gandhi Hospital. MeanwhileIOL has reportedthat scholar transport driver Ayanda Dludla appeared in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court on Thursday in connection with the deaths of 14 children in a crash in the Vaal in January.
