Solomon BhumuPost ReporterA 30-YEAR-OLD Harare man, Calisto Makiwa, has been convicted of culpable homicide and fined US$400 by the Mutare magistrates Mrs Annie Ndiraya. The conviction stems from a fatal road accident on November 27, 2024, along the Harare-Mutare Road, which claimed the life of pedestrian Eddie Muripo (35). Makiwa appeared before Mrs Ndiraya, facing charges under Section 49 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act [Chapter 9:23].
Prosecutor Mrs Tafadzwa Zulu presented the case, outlining how Makiwa negligently struck and killed Muripo, who was crossing the road, while driving a Benz ATEGEO rigid truck. The court found that Makiwa failed to exercise due caution, despite being aware of the potential risks. Muripo died instantly from severe head injuries and rib bruises.
During the hearing, Makiwa admitted to the charges, expressed remorse, and revealed that he had assisted Muripo’s family with burial arrangements. Mrs Ndiraya sentenced Makiwa to pay a fine of US$400 or face a six-month jail term if the fine remains unpaid.Share on FacebookPost on XFollow usSave
