Maele said in an interview yesterday that his office has responded to a query by civil society entity Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiative (Cdedi) for the probe. “We are in receipt of your [Cdedi] letter. We have forwarded the same to the police for investigations,” reads the DPP’s response.
Cdedi executive director wrote to Maele requesting an explanation regarding the whereabouts of the fuel. The letter, dated March 18 2026, reads: “Independent investigations show that only 1.2 million litres came to Malawi, the rest was allegedly sold to a company in Tanzania. A local company was involved in this transaction.
“Malawians are interested in this matter since the fuel came in the name of Malawians and not specific individuals. Malawians have the right to know the whereabouts of the proceeds accrued from the sales.” Namiwa yesterday confirmed receiving the response letter from the DPP. The DRC government’s fuel pledge came at a time when Malawi was experiencing severe fuel shortages, forcing motorists to queue for days.
