DNA testing to confirm identity of decomposed body found in Hout Bay

A nylon bag was found inside the cupboard at the crime scene in Hout Bay, where a decomposed body was discovered. DNA testing is set to confirm whether a decomposing body, found hidden in a cupboard in an abandoned house in Hout Bay, belongs to 17-year-old Amiena Swano, who vanished on Valentine’s Day. As the investigation unfolds, missing persons organisations are urging the public to refrain from speculation at this critical stage.

It is understood that the body was discovered on Tuesday evening in Sea View, Hout Bay. Police spokesperson Thembakazu Mpendukana stated, “This office confirms that Hout Bay SAPS is currently investigating a case of murder following the discovery of a body found in Hout Bay. The identity is yet to be determined as the body was found decomposed.

Anyone with information is kindly requested to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111; alternatively, utilise the MySAPS app to report anonymously.” Candice van der Rheede, founder and director of the Western Cape Missing Persons Unit (WCMPU), said they could not confirm whether the body was that of missing Amiena Swano, who vanished after 5pm on Valentine’s Day. “It is not confirmed that it is her, as we have to wait for DNA results, and we are asking people not to speculate,” she said. A community leader, who wished to remain anonymous, echoed these sentiments, noting that the clothing found with the body could indicate it belongs to Swano, but that the parents must undergo DNA testing with the police.

Siya Monakali of the gender-based violence organisation Ilitha Labantu expressed deep concern regarding the discovery of the body. “Due to the condition of the body, formal identification has not yet been confirmed. Police have indicated that processes are underway to determine the identity of the deceased.

At this stage, no arrests have been made. “The seriousness of the case demands swift, coordinated, and transparent investigative action to ensure accountability and to address the growing concern within the community. This incident once again highlights the ongoing crisis of violence affecting women and children across the Western Cape. Families and communities continue to live with fear, uncertainty, and trauma linked to disappearances and gender-based violence.” Cape Argus has attempted to reach out to her family but has yet to receive a response.
