DJs festival to roll out

Malawi is set to have its first all-DJ Festival dubbed the TMV Jam Session set to debut on March 29 at Aero Lounge in Lilongwe. The establishment of the TMV Jam Session Festival follows rebranding of the Mighty Virus Jam Session, described as a moment which ushers in a new era of music, culture and social impact. According to a press statement, the organisers said they will continue to host high-energy events while introducing new formats, collaborations and cultural fusions to keep audiences engaged through the new platform.

Reads the statement in part: “The festival is designed not only to entertain, but also inspire conversations on mental health issues and social behaviour change programmes. Speaking in an interview yesterday, one of the leading organisers Mighty Virus said after the launch this month, the event will transition into a two-day festival slated for November 7 in one of the lakeshore districts. He said the annual event will feature other up-and-coming DJs who are showing potential.

Mighty Virus said during the event, they will undergo trainings focusing on how to further their craft. He said: “This is a viable idea in every sense. People need DJs in gatherings.

At the moment, we want to create a base where people can appreciate who a DJ is and our capabilities. If our friends in other countries are doing it, why should we lag behind?” One of the organising partners Five79 entertainment, through its founder Wisdom Phanga, said although DJs play an important role in the entertainment setup, they are not celebrated adequately. He said their status can be elevated by creating an event to focus on their work and contribution.

“DJs in other countries get paid well. They earn their living from their skill and that is not the case here. Through this festival, we are trying to show people their value and also motivate emerging DJs,” said Phanga. The event will feature some of the country’s top DJs such as DJ Thando, DJ Bubble Gum, Mighty Virus, VJ Ice, DJ Skippy, DJ Madball, DJ Flame, DJ Spin, DJ Malibu and DJ Slow Mo.
