According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), the Isuzu pickup, carrying three passengers, attempted to overtake a bus when it collided head-on with Bunjira’s oncoming car. “One person in the Isuzu died on the spot, while another passed on arrival at the hospital.

The third person has passed on today and was a passenger in the BMW involved in the accident,” ZRP confirmed in a statement on its official X account.

The accident left Bunjira injured, though he survived.

The crash has now claimed a total of three lives — two passengers from the Isuzu and Brenda from Bunjira’s car.

Reports indicate that Bunjira and Brenda were travelling to Honde Valley at the time of the crash.

The two were part of the organising committee of the NetOne Albun Honde Valley Marathon, a race founded by Bunjira.

They were on their way to mark and certify the marathon route as a qualifier for the Comrades Marathon.

The tragic loss has cast a shadow over preparations for the event, which had been positioned as an important milestone for long-distance runners seeking to compete internationally.

Police have urged motorists to exercise caution on the country’s highways, particularly on busy stretches such as the Rusape-Nyanga road, where overtaking errors have caused multiple fatalities in recent years. 🔗
