Dambile sprints into history with Commonwealth 200m gold

South Africa’s sprint sensation Sinesipho Dambile produced the performance of his career on Friday night, storming to Commonwealth Games gold in the men’s 200m to claim his first senior international title and continue the country’s rich sprinting legacy. The 24-year-old crossed the line in 19.96 seconds at Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow, comfortably beating Nigeria’s Udodi Onwuzurike, who claimed silver in a season’s best 20.09. Having already announced himself as the favourite with a blistering 19.80 in the semi-finals, the second-fastest time in Commonwealth Games history, Dambile backed it up when it mattered most, overcoming the slowest reaction time off the blocks before powering away from the field down the home straight.

Speaking to theSouth African Sports Confederation, Olympic and Paralympic Committee (SASCOC)after the race, Dambile described the victory as the culmination of months of hard work. “Man, this is beautiful. It’s a beautiful moment.

It’s something that I’ve been working for this season,” Dambile said. Since I started performing in South Africa, winning the South African championship, it was all just a build-up for this moment, and I did it. Where, it matters the most.

Reflecting on his race strategy, Dambile said his only focus was crossing the finish line first. “All I needed was just to stay focused, stay relaxed on the race. I wasn’t focused on time.

All I cared about was the gold and I was in a better position. Once I came out of the curve, I just stayed relaxed and I was pulling away from everybody.” The Commonwealth title caps a remarkable season for the South African, who arrived in Glasgow ranked fourth in the world after setting a personal best of 19.74 at the Doha Diamond League earlier this year. Dambile credited the team around him for his rapid rise on the international stage.
