Crucial tests for KZN schools as rugby season enters final stretch

While the highly-anticipated clash between Western Cape giants Paarl Gimnasium and Paul Roos Gymnasium dominates this weekend’s schoolboy rugby calendar, several important fixtures involving KwaZulu-Natal schools are expected to attract significant attention. The KwaZulu-Natal spotlight falls on three key encounters, with traditional rivals set to battle for provincial bragging rights as the season approaches its decisive stages. One of the standout fixtures will see Maritzburg College travel to Botha’s Hill to face Kearsney College in what promises to be another fiercely contested encounter between two of the province’s most respected rugby programmes.

Westville Boys’ High School will be looking to bounce back strongly from their recent defeat to Durban High School when they host Michaelhouse. The home side will be eager to regain momentum and finish the season on a positive note after a challenging few weeks. Another intriguing contest will take place in Hilton, where Hilton College welcome Northwood School.

Both teams have shown flashes of quality this season and will be aiming to build consistency heading into the closing stages of their campaigns. Nationally, all eyes will be on Paarl Gimnasium and Paul Roos, who meet in what could ultimately decide the unofficial national school rugby championship. Paarl Gimnasium currently occupy the top spot on most independent rankings and arrive on the back of a nine-match winning streak, having suffered only one defeat this season.

Paul Roos are equally impressive, bringing a seven-match winning run into the encounter. Like Gim, their only loss of the season came against Stellenberg, adding further intrigue to what is expected to be one of the biggest schoolboy rugby matches of the year. Elsewhere, Paarl Boys’ High will look to revive their campaign when they take on Boland Landbou, while in the Noordvaal Cup, unbeaten Monument face a stern challenge against Garsfontein in another heavyweight clash.
