Patrick ChitumbaPOLICE in Midlands Province have recorded 38 459 criminal cases between January and September this year, including 124 murders, marking a slight decline compared to the same period last year when 38 559 incidents were reported, including 149 murders.The figures, according to the Officer Commanding Police in Midlands Province, Commissioner Patson Nyabadza, show a marginal drop in crime rates. He shared the statistics while addressing stakeholders at a provincial crime awareness campaign held at Cross Roads Business Centre in Silobela yesterday.“From January to September 2024, overall crime recorded was 38 559 while this year we have recorded 38 459, representing a decrease of about three percent.
In terms of murder, last year we recorded 149 cases as compared to 124 this year, representing a 17 percent decrease,” said Commissioner Nyabadza.However, he warned of worrying increases in other crime categories. Robbery cases rose 13 percent, from 60 last year to 68 this year. Adult rape cases slightly increased from 163 to 165, while juvenile rape cases surged seven percent from 285 to 306.Stock theft cases also rose, from 633 last year to 684 this year — an eight percent increase.“The main crimes of concern we are focusing on include murder, assaults, armed robbery, drugs and substance abuse, domestic violence, rape, and stock theft.
These offences are widespread across all districts, with Silobela among the most affected areas,” Commissioner Nyabadza said.The police are urging communities to stay vigilant and report suspicious activities to help curb the rising cases of robbery, juvenile rape, and stock theft.Leave a ReplyCancel reply
