Murder accused Govender brothers Darren and Ferrel Govender. They allegedly gunned down Durban businessman Shailen Singh. Dramatic scenes unfolded in the Durban High Court on Tuesday morning after senior State advocate Krishen Shah challengedFerrel Govender’slegal team over what he described as two conflicting versions put to a State witness explaining why Govender was at Meridian Park in Umhlanga when businessman Shailen Singh was shot dead on December 29, 2024.
Govender is on trial alongside his younger brother, Darren, for Singh’s murder. Shah pointed out that during Monday’s cross-examination, advocate Mike Hellens SC, representing Ferrel, was interrupted by instructing attorney Arvina Harricharan and advocate Joe Wolmarans, while putting his client’s version to the witness. Shah emphasised that although the legal team intervened, Ferrel himself did not raise his hand or indicate that the version being presented was incorrect.
On Monday, Hellens put it to the witness thatFerrel and Darrenhad gone to Meridian Park for lunch at a restaurant close by. As he was advancing that version, members of his legal team interrupted him, and an adjournment was requested. When proceedings resumed on Tuesday, Hellens presented a different version.
