The Walkers Social Club has called on communities across Blantyre and beyond to unite in supporting children battling cancer, as pressure continues to mount on the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) Children’s Cancer Ward.

This message of solidarity was at the heart of a fundraising fun walk earlier, an event aimed at raising K50 million to strengthen care for young cancer patients at Malawi’s main referral hospital. Walkers Coordinator Chiwawa Msimuko-Madise said the initiative demonstrated how powerful unity becomes when directed toward a vulnerable group like children with cancer.

“This initiative is a reminder that when communities unite, we can make a meaningful difference. The Children’s Cancer Ward faces immense pressure and requires consistent support. We are encouraged by the turnout and the generosity shown today,” she said.

She added that the Walkers will continue using their platform to champion health-related causes, stressing that childhood cancer remains a silent crisis that needs long-term public attention.

Paediatric Oncologist Dr Beatrice Chikaphonya Phiri welcomed the support, saying the funds will help address persistent shortages affecting treatment.

“The support from groups like the Walkers Social Club is invaluable. Childhood cancers are treatable, but we often struggle with shortages of essential medicines, diagnostic supplies and other supportive care items. This contribution will strengthen the services we provide and bring hope to many families,” she said. One of the participants, Edward Kabango, said he felt honoured to be part of the fundraising effort.

The walk brought together residents from different parts of the city, showing how collective action can ease the burden on families facing the realities of childhood cancer.

Starting from QECH and stretching along Masauko Chipembere Highway up to the Chichiri Roundabout before returning to the hospital, the event drew strong support from corporate partners.

FDH Bank donated K10 million, Family Health Services contributed K1 million, CCAM Consultancy provided K100,000, while individuals added various pledges.

The Walkers Social Club, which has supported various social initiatives over the years, said it will soon release a detailed financial and impact report.

Organisers also urged more individuals, groups and corporate partners to join future efforts aimed at improving paediatric cancer care in Malawi.
