Clergy hail peaceful campaigns

The clergy on the Copperbelt have commended the peaceful conduct of political campaigns, describing the prevailing calm as a sign of growing political tolerance among candidates and their supporters. House of Clergy Zambia National Executive Director Jimmy Ng’ambi told the media in an interview that the peaceful campaigns demonstrate that political players now appreciate that elections are a democratic process in which differing views and ideas should be respected. Ng’ambi said tolerance among political parties is essential to maintaining peace before, during and after the general elections.He noted that people are now able to move about freely wearing the regalia of their preferred political parties without fear of intimidation or persecution.Mr.

Ng’ambi also commended the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) for introducing a campaign timetable, saying it has helped maintain law and order.“The timetable clearly shows which political party is scheduled to campaign in a particular ward at a given time, and this has helped maintain peace and order during the campaign period,” he said.Meanwhile, Kingdom Springs of Life Embassy Church Senior Pastor Reverend Trevor Muziya attributed the peaceful campaigns to responsible leadership and political maturity among contestants.Rev Muziya said most political parties have respected the ECZ campaign guidelines by adhering to the designated campaign schedules, despite a few isolated incidents.“From my observation, political parties have respected the ECZ guidelines on campaign schedules. Apart from the incident in Ndola’s Mapalo area, where two parties almost clashed, the situation was resolved peacefully,” he said.Rev. Muziya has appealed to political parties and their supporters to continue upholding peace before, during and after the August general elections.
