TO end speculation and uncertainty, the City of eThekwini has put the matter of two giant statues on Snell Parade and at Moses Mabhida Stadium to rest. There was major discontent among ratepayers and residents when the statues were erected a few months ago. The project has sparked controversy over the City’s “misguided priorities in a city that struggles with poverty and infrastructure issues”. City Manager Musa Mbhele confirmed that the price tag on both statues is R22m.

“This was good value for money, the research showed that the cost of the statues was the lowest among other bidders. The statues complement investment along the promenade,” Mbhele added. “The statues serve as an investment to tourism and preservation of culture, and telling our own stories.

Although the figures will not generate direct profit, they are a catalyst for the tourism industry and the ambiance of the city,” added eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba. Xaba concluded that the statues will be unveiled either at the end of January or February.
