The Citroën Basalt, named after the volcanic rock that represents qualities of strength and durability that can be likened to SA’s vastly diverse landscapes and driving conditions, is an SUV-coupé that combines bold design, generous interior space and advanced comfort technologies. The Basalt becomes the third model sourced from India under Citroën’s C-Cubed programme, joining the C3 and Aircross to complete the local C-Cubed line-up. The SUV-coupé itself adds adds a fresh design expression, combining bold styling, intuitive connectivity and Citroën’s advanced comfort, without compromising on interior space or everyday practicality.
It’s really been a while since the last SUV-coupé was launched in SA, so expect the Basalt to claim a fair degree of market share with that competitive price tag and that “fast-back” design. The media was introduced to the Basalt recently and the drive on open roads and urban traffic was pleasing and comfortable with everyday convenience, featuring Proxi-Sense™ keyless entry and push-button start, cruise control with speed limiter, automatic air-conditioning and rear air vents designed for warm-weather comfort. This family-oriented SUV was very economical indeed, I managed around 6,2l/ 100km, which is not bad at all.
Under the hoodPower is delivered by a responsive 1,2-litre turbocharged petrol engine, producing 81kW and 205Nm of torque, paired with a smooth six-speed automatic transmission to balance performance and everyday efficiency. Inside, a soft-touch instrument panel extends across the cabin, complemented by practical storage solutions and a spacious five-seater layout that enhances the Basalt’s modern, refined interior. Safety is strengthened through a high-strength body structure and a comprehensive suite of systems, including electronic stability control, hill-hold control, tyre-pressure monitoring, ISOFIX child-seat anchors and six airbags as standard. The design blends a confident SUV stance with coupé-inspired proportions, expressed through elevated ground clearance, a strong bonnet line and robust exterior detailing, while a fastback-style roofline creates a distinctive silhouette and contributes to aerodynamic efficiency.
