Ferg Chivayo, brother to controversial businessman Sir Wicknell Chivayo, has completed a course at the Herbert Chitepo School of Ideology, a Zanu PF-run institution known for advancing the party’s ideological agenda…
Speaking after finishing the programme, Chivayo paid tribute to Zimbabwe’s fallen liberation heroes, particularly those who died in the Nyadzonya and Chimoio massacres during the country’s struggle for independence.
“I honour the brave men and women who gave their lives for our freedom,” Chivayo said. “Their sacrifices at places like Nyadzonya and Chimoio laid the foundation for the Zimbabwe we live in today.”
Chivayo also emphasised the importance of mental liberation, stating that true independence goes beyond political freedom.
“The decolonisation of the mind is crucial,” he said. “We need to free ourselves mentally to fully understand and appreciate our heritage and identity as Zimbabweans.”
He expressed gratitude to the institution’s leadership, particularly its principal, Ishmael Mada.
“I want to thank Principal Mada for the role he plays in shaping national consciousness through this institution,” said Chivayo.
The Chitepo School of Ideology is often criticised by opponents as a vehicle for political indoctrination.
However, Principal Mada has consistently defended its purpose.
“We want to position every citizen to be a true Zimbabwean, who is aware of his or her history,” Mada has said in previous remarks. “Our mandate is to decolonise the mind.”
The school continues to attract members of the ruling party and those closely aligned with Zanu PF, with its curriculum heavily focused on liberation history, nationalism, and ideological loyalty.
