Theseus ShambareA 26-year-old Zimdancehall artist from Chitungwiza has released a powerful new single tackling Zimbabwe’s growing drug and substance abuse crisis among the youth. The track, titled Moyo Wekubereka, speaks to the pain and regret felt by parents whose children have fallen victim to dangerous substances, leaving many to question why they ever brought them into the world. In the song, Previous Marimo known in his circles as “Silent Swagger”, delivers a raw and emotional message, portraying the anguish of “vabereki varikuchema kuti vakazvarirei ivo vana varikuperera kuma kumutoriro neguka” — parents weeping over children whose lives are being destroyed by drugs.Speaking in an interview, the musician said his mission is to use music as a weapon to fight societal ills and inspire positive change among young people.“Drugs are killing our generation,” he said. “Through Moyo Wekubereka, I want to open the eyes of the youth and remind them that life is precious, and our families are suffering when we go down this destructive path.”The single is his seventh release, all of which carry messages aimed at steering young people away from crime, addiction and other negative influences. His earlier tracks have touched on themes of unity, discipline and the value of hard work.Zimbabwe has been grappling with a surge in drug abuse, particularly among young people, with substances such as crystal meth (known locally as guka), marijuana and cough syrups being widely abused.Experts have warned that the trend is fuelling crime, violence, and school dropouts, while also putting a strain on public health facilities. However, artists like the 26-year-old musician say creative expression remains one of the most powerful ways to reach and influence young audiences.“I grew up seeing some of my peers lose their future to drugs. Some are now in prison, others are gone.

I don’t want to just sing for entertainment — I want my music to save lives,” he said.Moyo Wekubereka is already gaining traction on local radio stations and social media platforms, with many listeners praising its honest message and calling for more artists to take a stand against drug abuse.Share on FacebookPost on XFollow usSave
