A 36-year-old Chingola resident has died after being buried in a tunnel collapse while scavenging for copper ore at Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) Dump Site 13 in Chingola District of Copperbelt Province. The deceased, identified as Kelvin Musebo, was reportedly extracting copper ore with a colleague on Saturday evening when a pile of earth collapsed and blocked the entrance to the tunnel in which they were working, according to police. Copperbelt Police Commissioner, Mwala Yuyi, confirmed the incident in a statement, saying Musebo was completely buried, while his colleague, 34-year-old Johnson Mubanga, was partially trapped and later rescued by fellow scavengers.

“The two were rushed to Nchanga North General Hospital, where Musebo was pronounced dead on arrival, while Mubanga was treated and discharged later on,” Yuyi said. “Police visited the hospital and confirmed the incident.” Yuyi said an inquiry file had been opened to establish the circumstances surrounding the accident.
