The municipality of Matola, the most populous in Mozambique, has contracted China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) to build a drainage system to serve 90,000 people, in an investment of 548.7 million meticais (approximately US$ 8.58 million). According to the award announcement, this is an urban mobility project for the Maputo Metropolitan Area, implemented by the Metropolitan Transport Agency and financed by the World Bank. “Approximately 90,000 residents will directly benefit from the project,” said Firmino Guambe, councillor for infrastructure in the municipality of Matola, to Lusa today.
For the contract, the China Road and Bridge Corporation, one of the largest construction firms in the world, was selected. According to the councillor, the works in that municipality, on the outskirts of the city of Maputo, will last eight months and include the construction of 12 kilometres of drainage channel, starting from the Mathlemele neighbourhood and passing through Matibjana, Nkobe and Matola Gare, some of the most populous districts in the country. The Maputo Metropolitan Area, which includes Matola and the capital city, as well as Boane and Marracuene, has a population of around three million.
