Residents of Chambishi on the Copperbelt Province have called for the reopening and recapitalisation of Chambishi Metals, saying the prolonged shutdown had worsened unemployment in the area. Chambishi Ward Councillor Francis Chambe made the plea during a rally addressed by President Hakainde Hichilema, describing the mine as the economic lifeline of the town. “Mr President, we have seen you bringing to life other mines, which we want replicated here by opening Chambishi Metals,” Chambe said.

He added that the absence of major economic activity in the area had left residents grappling with severe unemployment, which he described as “haunting.” In response, Hichilema assured residents that government was actively searching for a credible investor to take over and revive the mine. “We are looking into that. We are busy looking for credible investors to run the mine, which has stalled,” he said.
