Competition and Fair Trading Commission (CFTC) has issued a stern warning to traders, urging them to avoid unfair business practices during the festive season.
In a press release, CFTC Chief Executive Officer Lloyds Vincent Nkhoma reminded businesses that the commission will not hesitate to impose severe penalties on those found violating the Competition and Fair Trading Act.
Consumers are being advised to be vigilant when shopping for Christmas and New Year essentials.
The CFTC warns against excessive pricing, false advertising, and the sale of expired or substandard goods.
âWe are monitoring the market closely and will take action against anyone found engaging in unfair trading practices,â Nkhoma said, in a statement.
To protect themselves, shoppers are encouraged to demand a valid receipt for every purchase, check expiry dates on perishable items, and compare prices to avoid being misled by fake discounts.
The CFTC also advises consumers to insist on refunds, replacements, or repairs for defective products and to verify the reputation of online sellers before making payments.
The commissionâs Public Relations Officer, Innocent Helema, emphasized that consumers need to be aware of misleading pricing and demand redress in time when rights have been violated.
