North West businessman and ANC treasurer Suleiman Carrim will not appear before the Madlanga Commission on Thursday after being hospitalised on Monday. Commission spokesperson Jeremy Michaels confirmed that Carrim’s legal representatives had informed the commission that he is currently in hospital. “Mr Carrim’s legal representatives have been in touch with the commission’s legal team and they have confirmed that he has been hospitalised.
It is evident that he will not be able to appear on Thursday,” Michaels said. He added that the commission was still awaiting formal communication from Carrim’s legal team but was proceeding on the basis that he would not attend. “We wish him a speedy recovery.
It is a sensitive matter and as a commission we are sensitive to that so we are going to await formal communication,” he said. Michaels said that once a medical certificate is submitted, the commission will consider it in line with its procedures. In any event, the commission would not want to put him under unnecessary and undue strain.

“We will await confirmation of his condition,” he said. Carrim was due to return to the commission on Thursday, where he is being questioned over financial dealings involving companies linked to businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and Hangwani Maumela. When asked whether another witness would be called to fill the scheduled time, Michaels said the commission was working under tight deadlines but would engage with Carrim’s legal team before making a decision.
