The death of a young father of two, who was killed in a motor accident in Hesketh Drive, has shaken the Hayfields community and amplified renewed calls for more traffic-calming measures on the high-accident road. The man was killed last Friday morning in a collision with a car on a stretch of Hesketh Drive that residents describe as “a racetrack” for speeding motorists. Ward councillor Edith Elliot called for the community to share their sympathies with the grieving family by laying flowers at the accident site.
“We sympathise with the family who have lost a father. “This is the second incident this year and it would be nice for the community to lay some flowers at the scene in solidarity with the family,” said Elliot. Residents in the vicinity of the accident said the incident was the result of reckless driving along the route.“We heard about the accident, and these accidents occur often as motorists speed along this road like it is a highway, not just at night, but even in the day.
“Years ago, a motorist even crashed into my yard. We are calling for some plan of action to address the issue,” said a resident. The resident added that when there are diversions from the N3, multiple trucks drive through the residential area, adding to the stress of already speeding vehicles.

Elliot said they will be holding a community meeting to call for the placement of traffic-calming measures that will reduce the risk of accidents in the area. “For years, there have been multiple incidents that have claimed lives. “Soon there will be a lot more traffic due to developments starting in the area.
“These accidents need to be avoided,” said Elliot. Elliot said the meeting will call on residents to sign a petition calling for traffic-calming measures, and will also provide information about new property developments and the extension of Hesketh Drive.
