“Where did my data go?” is the question thousands of Zimbabweans are asking as their data bundles mysteriously disappear while the profits of the country’s major telecommunications operators—Econet, NetOne, and ZOL—continue to soar.
From vanished WhatsApp bundles to so-called “unlimited” packages that stop working halfway through the month, a murky pattern of unexplained data depletion, throttled speeds, and vanishing credit has triggered outrage among consumers, engineers, and insiders alike.
Kudzai Murahwa, a Harare resident, shared her experience of purchasing a US$1 weekly WhatsApp bundle from Econet, only to find it gone within hours. “I was on Wi-Fi all day at work. I barely used WhatsApp, but when I checked later that evening, it said the bundle had expired,” she said.
