FCB Nyasa Big Bullets have said they are not satisfied with the K19 million gross from their Castel Challenge Cup semi-final against Mzuzu City Hammers played last Sunday. The People’s Team, who were the hosts, won the match 2-0 at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre to qualify for the final in which they will face Goshen City Dedza Dynamos. From the gross, K3.8 million went towards expenses leaving a balance of K15.5 million.
The two teams and stadium owners, Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, received K3.87 million each, Football Association of Malawi and Malawi National Council of Sports got K3.1 million and K775 000, respectively. But despite the match grossing the highest revenue in the competition so far, Bullets acting chief executive officer Albert Chigoga said considering the turn out, they were expecting more. He said: “We are not that satisfied.
To begin with, tickets were sold out before half time and many spectators struggled to watch the game. “This created fraud as people manning the gates took advantage of the challenge to cash in.” Meanwhile, in contrast to the second semi-final, the first one between Goshen City Dedza Dynamos and Blue Eagles of Lilongwe at the same venue grossed K2.8 million with the two teams and stadium owners getting slightly over K400 000 each. Initially, the match was scheduled for Dedza Stadium home ground of Dedza Dynamos, but it was changed after Eagles expressed concern that the venue was not suitable to host a last four fixture in an elite competition.
