REPORTERThe Bulawayo Children’s Choir continues to cement its reputation as one of the city’s most dynamic young musical ensembles. From reimagining Mathias Xavier’s classic Tormented Soul in their heartfelt rendition Awu Yeiye (The Refix) – Ode to Our Musical Heroes, to donating shoes, jerseys and clothing to an orphanage in Nkulumane 5, and collaborating with respected local artistes, the choir shows no signs of slowing down.Their latest milestone is the release of vibrant visuals for their empowerment anthem Yes I Can, featuring Zimbabwean hip-hop heavyweights Asaph Afrika and Meet Luminous.Since its debut, the video has clocked more than 500 views, capturing the uplifting spirit of the track. Yes I Can is an energetic celebration of resilience, faith and belief in one’s potential, blending the choir’s youthful vibrancy with powerful inspirational messages.
The collaboration also highlights the artistry of Asaph Afrika, a pillar of local hip-hop, and the dynamic Meet Luminous.At its core, the track is a tribute to gratitude and divine favour, encouraging listeners to embrace hope and determination.Reflecting on the collaboration, choir director Trevor Mawaka described the experience as extraordinary.“Working with Asaph Afrika and Meet Luminous on ‘Yes I Can’ was an incredible experience,” he said. Asaph brought a sharp, innovative flow and a vibe that instantly connected with our choir – his passion for storytelling through rap really elevated the message of the song.“Meet Luminous, equally impressive with his lyrical dexterity and raw energy, who complemented Asaph perfectly. Both artistes were phenomenal, and they pushed our young singers to bring their best.”Mawaka added that the energy on set was infectious.“The video shoot was just as exciting.
