Amid severe weather conditions causing chaos across the Eastern Cape, the education department has announced the closure of schools in Buffalo City Metro on Friday. Acting district director Vuyiseka Siciko confirmed the closure in a memorandum to the district management team, circuit managers, school principals and school governing bodies. “In light of the continued inclement weather conditions currently being experienced across Buffalo City, and after careful consideration of the potential risks posed to learners, educators and support staff, the [acting district director] has taken the decision to close all schools in Buffalo City on Friday,” she wrote.

“The safety and wellbeing of all learners and employees remain our highest priority, and this precautionary measure has become necessary due to concerns relating to flooding, unsafe road conditions and possible disruptions to transport services.” Siciko urged principals to communicate the closure urgently to all parents, guardians, teachers and relevant stakeholders to ensure the necessary arrangements were made timeously. She also advised principals to ensure all available school communication platforms were used. Pupils should remain indoors and take care during the adverse weather.

Siciko urged schools to report any weather-related damage or emergencies to their circuit manager immediately. Click here to join the Daily Dispatch’s WhatsApp channel and get the latest news delivered straight to your phone
