For many musicians a debut album is a project that comes early in their careers when they are in the spotlight. However, Bucci’s debut albumAgainst The Odds(ATO)made a statement about longevity and patience in the industry. As an artist who has been part of Malawi’s music since 2008, fans might have expected a full-length album years ago, the wait, however, proves worthwhile.
The album opener, which features Cynthia Zonde Zulu, frames Bucci Worldwide as an artist who is conscious of his environment and deliberately positions himself outside it. “In a country where almost everyone sounds and moves the same he chose different…” The opening line presents the artists’ willingness to sacrifice comfort and quick success in favour of originality. On the trackProud,Bucci strips things back and speaks from a personal place.
The lyrics give him a chance to reflect on where he has come from and where he is headed. When he says he is “very, very proud” of himself, it lands with emotional weight. It is not said to impress, but to acknowledge the battles fought, the patience exercised and the strength it has taken to keep going.

Every solid album needs a touch of love and Bucci in is debut delivers it in the right doses. He allows romance and vulnerability to surface naturally. On tracks such asSteyi, Chibaba, Feel the Something, Lero, Katundu Wa Boma, LovoandNdekha, love and romance is shown in its many shades playful, intimate and expressive.
Unlike projects where guest artists feel shoehorned into tracks, Bucci’s features feel organic, supporting his vision rather than overshadowing it. Each collaboration brings distinct and new energy while maintaining a cohesive sound throughout.
