British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua has sustained minor injuries following a car crash in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two people. The former world champion was travelling in a vehicle that collided with a stationary commercial truck on the busy Lagos–Ibadan Expressway near Lagos at around 12:00 local time on Monday. According to Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), five adult men were involved in the crash.

Two people died, two others survived without injuries, while Joshua was taken to hospital with minor injuries. Photos from the scene, shared by the FRSC and reported by theBBC, showed the 36-year-old being assisted out of the back seat of a black SUV amid broken glass. Preliminary reports from local officials indicated that the two people who died were male foreign nationals.

The accident involved a black Lexus vehicle and a stationary red commercial truck. The FRSC said the vehicle appeared to have lost control during an overtaking manoeuvre before crashing into the truck parked by the roadside. The Lagos–Ibadan Expressway is regarded as one of Nigeria’s most dangerous roads, particularly during the festive season when traffic volumes increase as Nigerians living abroad return home.

Joshua, who was born in Watford, United Kingdom, has family roots in Sagamu, Ogun State, near the crash site. He had been spending time in Nigeria following his recent victory over American YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul on December 19. Reacting to the incident, Paul wrote on X: “Life is much more important than boxing.

I am praying for the lost lives, AJ and anyone impacted by today’s unfortunate accident.” Hours before the crash, Joshua posted a video on Instagram showing him playing table tennis with another man. It was not immediately clear when or where the video was recorded.
