The dance ensemble is the brainchild of twelve young visionaries—Ashley Banga, Charlotte Maregere, Elshaddai Mandizvidza, Panashe Vaiya, Divine Ruhonde, George Kundai Chimunhai, Eunice Sande, Darlington Ruhonde, Lisa Vambe, Joseph Chipadza, Dereck Shoshore, and Altino Foloko—all united by a powerful mission: to promote Zimbabwean culture through artistic dance while providing a meaningful platform for youth to flourish creatively.
Their early years were marked by grind and grit.
Operating in a region with limited resources, the group wrestled with funding shortages, lacked access to advanced training, and juggled members’ personal schedules and commitments.
Yet, these challenges only strengthened their resolve to soar.
They reckon the road has not been without hurdles.
Competing against already established dance troupes, Blackbird Dance Group needed more than talent—they needed identity, innovation, and persistence.
Securing support for costumes, stage equipment, and travel was an ongoing struggle, as was accessing quality mentorship and workshops.
But through each barrier, the group’s spirit remained unbroken.
They harnessed community collaborations and grassroots support, bringing dance to local schools and nurturing the next generation’s interest in Zimbabwean traditions.
Their first public performance in 2019 at Mucheke Stadium on Heroes Day electrified local audiences and set the stage for bigger things.
By 2020, their presence expanded to regional festivals with partnerships like My Age Zimbabwe—spreading the joy of dance beyond city limits.
Recognition arrived steadily: winning the Masvingo Talent Show in 2023, clinching the Masvingo Achievement Awards in 2024, and taking first place in the National Dance Association Zimbabwe competitions echoed their growing prowess.
