Following the conclusion of the retreat, BDP Executive Secretary Ame Makoba told The Monitor that whilst delegates engaged in robust discussions on the future of the party, no formal resolutions were adopted. “The retreat alone platform does not make binding resolutions. The discussions of the retreat were meant to inform the leadership of the party towards what direction members of the party think the party should take from now on, going into the future,” Makoba said.
However, Makoba said one thing remained clear as it stood out clearly from their engagements with members of the party. He highlighted that the collective agreement was on the importance of unity and peace within the party. “One of the things that has been emphasised is that the party needs to work more and more on unity, like building unity and synergy in the party,” he said.
Amongst other things agreed upon, though not binding, Makoba said, was to regain the trust they once had from Batswana at large. “We ought to work hard to regain the trust of Batswana because we consider ourselves not an orthodox opposition party. We consider ourselves a government waiting to return,” Makoba said.

As the retreat was held at the twilight of its 64th anniversary, Makoba said the party intends to celebrate every year to reflect on its existence. “For the past 64 years of existence, we did not have commemorations like this, and we intend to do it now,” he said. Now, post the retreat, BDP will focus on trying to restore peace and unity between former presidents Ian Khama and Mokgweetsi Masisi as per Mpho Balopi’s declaration.
