Police have launched a major investigation after a group of armed thugs stormed a local power substation, kidnapping security guards and firing shots at a supervisor. The incident occurred on January 14 at the Merafong City Local Municipality’s electrical substation in Welverdiend near the railway houses. At 22:15, a supervisor from Siqobile Security arrived at the site for a routine check.
As he drove in, he saw several unknown men fleeing the substation. As he went closer, some of these men opened fire. The supervisor immediately turned around and drove to the Carletonville Police Station to report the matter.When the supervisor returned to the scene with police officers, the substation was deserted.The two security guards assigned to the post were nowhere to be found.
Despite this, nothing was stolen from the facility. After some time, the two missing security officers returned and told the police that they had been overpowered by the thugs and tied up. They were then taken to a nearby open veld while the thugs waited for the supervisor to leave.

During the ordeal, the attackers robbed the two guards of their mobile phones and torches. Despite the violence, the guards were luckily not injured. The police in Carletonville are investigating attempted murder, armed robbery, and kidnapping charges.
