Peace Parks Foundation and Malawi Scotland Partnership (MaSP) have appointed President Peter Mutharika as honorary patron in a gesture the government says recognises positive strides the President has made since assuming office in October 2025. Chief Secretary in the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) Justin Saidi said the message of the appointment was conveyed to Mutharika by former Mozambican president Joaquim Chissano, who is also the foundation’s vice-chairperson. “The appointment is in recognition of President Mutharika’s leadership and unwavering commitment to sustainable development, regional cooperation and ecological resilience,” he said.
The foundation works to renew and preserve large, functional ecosystems through establishment and development of transfrontier conservation areas in southern Africa while MaSP is an international development network created to foster collaboration and friendship between the people of Malawi and Scotland. Founded in 1997 by Antony Rupert, former South African president Nelson Mandela and Prince Benhard of the Netherlands, the foundation champions conservation and regional integration in Africa. On the MaSP appointment as co-honorary patron, Saidi said this marks the second time for Mutharika to serve in this capacity, having previously held the role during his first term between 2014 and 2019.
