Animal rescuers celebrated for their lifesaving efforts

Cape Town animal welfare organisations, the Animal Welfare Society of South Africa and the Cape of Good Hope SPCA, have received international recognition at the 2026 LUXlife Pet Products and Services Awards for their work protecting animals. While many Capetonians only see the happy endings when rescued animals find new homes, the daily reality for animal welfare inspectors and veterinary teams is responding to cruelty complaints, treating injured pets and helping communities care for their animals. Now that work has earned international recognition at the LUXlife Pet Products and Services Awards.

The Animal Welfare Society of South Africa (AWS SA) has received two honours at the 2026 awards, recognising its impact and community outreach in animal welfare. AWS SA was named Most Progressive and Impactful Animal Welfare Organisation 2026 – South Africa and received the Community Outreach Excellence Award 2026 following what organisers described as a rigorous, merit-based research and evaluation process conducted by an independent panel. Established in 2018, the awards programme celebrates organisations and individuals making exceptional contributions to the global pet and animal care sector, recognising measurable impact, ethical standards, innovation, governance and sustained excellence.

Animal welfare organisations in the Western Cape regularly deal with cases of neglect, abandonment and cruelty, often in communities where pet owners struggle to afford veterinary care. In recent years, Cape Argus has reported on rescues ranging from dogs found in illegal breeding operations to animals suffering severe neglect, highlighting the growing demand for animal protection services and the critical role inspectors and veterinary teams play in safeguarding vulnerable animals across the province. The organisation said the recognition reflects the work of the people on the frontline of animal protection.

“These awards belong to every member of our team, our committed inspectors who uphold animal protection laws, our compassionate and tireless veterinary staff and our outreach teams who work every day to change hearts and minds across communities,” the organisation said. AWS SA CEO Dr John McMullen, who has served the society for more than 50 years, welcomed the recognition, noting the organisation has been serving communities for almost a century. He said the international recognition reflects the organisation’s continued efforts to improve the lives of animals across the Western Cape. AWS SA previously received recognition in 2019 as a contender for an Impumelelo Award for its innovative and humane pet population management approach, including a programme aimed at preventing communicable diseases.
