President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed confidence that the ANC national general council (NGC), due to kick off in Johannesburg on Monday, will contribute to the deepening of the party’s renewal. The ANC NGC, where party delegates review the organisation’s policies, follows the conclusion of provincial general councils (PGCs). Addressing Cosatu members during the labour federation’s 40th anniversary over the weekend, Ramaphosa said the ANC’s NGC was a crucial gathering as its main purpose was to keep the national democratic revolution alive.
The NGC’s role is to review the performance of the party leadership, as well as that of the ANC. But it is also a great platform to enhance the renewal of the ANC and to speed up the process of rebuilding the ANC. “So, it is an important gathering of the membership of the ANC, which I’m confident will come up with good decisions and good resolutions that will take our national democratic revolution forward,” he said.
Ramaphosa was speaking a day after the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal concluded its PGC. The province had to reconvene its PGC after it had been found a significant number of branches were not represented at the previous PGC, which took place over a week ago. Despite the hurdles faced by the ANC KZN provincial task team (PTT) when organising the PGC, the party’s national executive committee (NEC) member deployed to the province, Dixon Masemola, said the challenges did not represent a crisis.

“There’s no crisis at all. It’s just for us to perfect and sharpen the organisational processes and systems,” he said. The “robust” discussions during last Friday’s KZN PGC, Masemola said, will ensure that the party in the province would be able to add value to the discussions at the NGC.
