Agorosso tackles mental health

Musician Agorosso has offered an escape through his piece Nkhawa as a contribution towards easing mental health challenges in the country. The song, recorded in 2022 by OBK Beats, is now in motion pictures after Will Kachigwali shot its video this month. In an interview, Agorosso, real name Lloyd Phaundi, said he wants to give hope to everyone passing through hardships.

“Now I have dropped a video for the song so that I should scale up awareness on mental health issues. The song is advising that suicide is not a solution to problems” he said. The artist said he has chosen to talk about mental health due to the alarming rise of suicide cases in the country.

“There is need for more awareness on the issue,” he said. On his part, musician and writer Chifuniro Banda said firstly as human beings, irrespective of our art and professions, we experience moments of sadness. He said: “As such, we have first-hand information to tackle mental health issues in our art.

Secondly, we live in a society where the negative effects of mental illness or depression are increasingly evident as people are losing relationships and most importantly, their values and self-esteem. “As artists with a platform to address these issues, we can help with strategies, coping mechanisms and tackling the stigmatisation associated with mental health. We need to speak out as Agorosso has done.” Banda said on its own, music has the power to speak to the soul.

“Personally, I have dedicated 2025 to this cause in my writing and upcoming album, which tackles self-affirmation and gratitude to cope with depression,” he said. In Nkhawa, Agorosso, sounding emotional than ussual, acknoledges that people do go through emotional struggles every now and then. He then talks about how those episodes can be handles as he firmly says suicide is never the solution and that every peoblem do come to an end eventually. Agorosso, who does Afro-centric music which he calls Nkhetekete, has two albums to his credit namely Famba (Let’s Walk) released in 2014 and Bwera Udzaone which came out in 2017.
