Several residents across Pietermaritzburg are once again bearing the brunt of ongoing water outages caused by burst water pipes, with some communities left without a consistent supply for days. Residents in Mountain Rise and Northdale have been without water following multiple pipe bursts in the areas. A Mountain Rise resident said households have endured an unreliable water supply for more than three days.
Shamim Essa said the situation has become increasingly unbearable, especially as residents continue to receive high municipal bills despite the disruptions. It is a constant battle for us. Either we don’t have water or electricity, and it has been extremely difficult.
We are forced to find alternative water supplies and even bathe at relatives’ homes. “Most of the time, we are not told why there is no water, which is very frustrating. We had water this morning, and now it is gone again,” said Essa.

In lower Northdale, residents were left without water overnight after a pipe burst late on Tuesday evening. Although repairs were carried out, another pipe in the same vicinity burst shortly afterwards, with repair work currently under way. Lower Northdale ward councillor Rooksana Ahmed said the recurring pipe bursts were the result of ageing infrastructure that has not been adequately maintained.
