The Department of Immigration is set to hold a sports tournament in the border town of Beitbridge on Sunday themed “a fight against human smuggling and drug trafficking” to raise funds for charity. It is envisaged that proceeds from the tournament will be channelled to organisation handling issues to do with vulnerable migrants in the border town. Regional Immigration officer in charge of the southern region (Beitbridge, Masvingo, Chiredzi and Sango) Mr Joshua Chibunda said they had covered a lot of ground in terms of logistics.He said they had invited their South African counterparts (Beitbridge) to the tournament which will include football and netball competitions.

“We will have the following teams Busters, Immigration Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe Revenue Authority, Superstrikers, Rovers, Inspectors, Zimborders, Immigration South Africa and these are made mostly from other law enforcement agencies participating in the tournament,” said Mr Chibundu. “In terms of netball, there will be teams from Rovers, Superstrikers, Trust Me, Immigration Zimbabwe, Zimra, Zimborders/Inspectors and ZINARA.“The sports tournament is part of our efforts to engage with the community and raise awareness about the dangers of human smuggling and drug trafficking. We are grateful for the support from participating teams so far”.

He said it was important for them to collaborate with line stakeholders to raise awareness about the importance of combating human smuggling and drug trafficking and substance abuse.
