The Comrades Marathon Association’s decision to cut ties with KwaZulu-Natal Athletics and Athletics South Africa was drastic, but it was not taken lightly or without cause. Then came the leaked ASA memorandum proposing a private company through which commercial opportunities, including sponsorship, broadcasting and licensing deals linked to major races, could be pursued. A ministerial inquiry into Sascoc examined allegations of poor governance, financial mismanagement and constitutional breaches.

More recently, Parliament recommended that the ASA board be dissolved, saying the federation had failed to provide stable leadership, maintain adequate financial controls and protect athletes’ interests. The committee’s chairperson, Joe McGluwa, described ASA as being “on the verge of collapse”, with infighting and inadequate financial controls. KZNA is also dealing with leadership turmoil, while governance controversies have engulfed Netball South Africa.

The Comrades Marathon succeeds because it has institutional knowledge, sound governance, a committed volunteer base and operational independence. It should not be treated as a revenue stream for struggling federations. The overwhelming vote against re-affiliation was therefore understandable. Members chose to protect an institution they have built and preserved.
