Australian exploration company Blaze Minerals has identified a significant copper-lead-zinc mineralized zone at its Krokodil Prospect within Botswana’s Dinokwe Project, bolstering the country’s rising profile as a base metals exploration destination. The discovery comes after geological mapping, trenching, and rock-chip sampling confirmed mineralization linked to a major fault structure in the Limpopo Mobile Belt. The company reported a copper-in-soil anomaly extending roughly one kilometer long and 100 meters wide, with soil samples registering copper concentrations up to 288 parts per million.

Seven trenches, spanning 443 meters, yielded promising handheld XRF readings, including copper grades reaching as high as 8.59 percent, alongside notable lead and zinc mineralization. Geologists also identified visible copper minerals such as malachite and chalcopyrite, as well as lead-bearing galena, suggesting a polymetallic mineral system. Laboratory analysis is currently underway on 89 channel samples collected from the trenches to validate these preliminary field results.

Blaze Minerals is advancing plans to acquire up to 90 percent of B&J Geoconsultants, the holder of the Dinokwe Project’s prospecting licenses, which cover approximately 1,771 square kilometers. Situated within the mineral-rich Limpopo Mobile Belt, about 150 kilometers south of the historic Selebi-Phikwe copper-nickel mining district, the project’s geological similarities with Selebi-Phikwe have fueled optimism about its potential to host economically significant base metal deposits. This recent discovery underscores Botswana’s expanding role as a frontier for critical minerals beyond its well-known diamond industry.

With global demand for copper expected to surge due to renewable energy infrastructure, electric vehicles, and power transmission networks, successful exploration efforts could diversify Botswana’s mining sector and lessen its reliance on diamond revenues. The Dinokwe Project also reflects growing confidence among foreign investors in Botswana’s stable mining regulations and favorable geological environment. If laboratory assays confirm the high-grade trench results and subsequent drilling outlines a substantial resource, the project could draw further international investment into Botswana’s base metals industry.

Yet, the project remains in the early stages of exploration. High surface grades do not necessarily translate into economically viable deposits. Factors such as ore continuity, depth, metallurgy, and development costs will ultimately determine commercial feasibility. Investors and policymakers will be watching closely as laboratory results and future drilling programs unfold before making judgments about the project’s economic prospects.
